{"id":23,"date":"2014-01-02T13:12:36","date_gmt":"2014-01-02T02:12:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cadreconsulting.biz\/wp\/?page_id=23"},"modified":"2014-01-04T11:37:39","modified_gmt":"2014-01-04T00:37:39","slug":"south-america-oct-nov-2013","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/cadreconsulting.biz\/wp\/?page_id=23","title":{"rendered":"Brazil &#8211; Oct-Nov 2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Our experiences and photos of Brazil<\/h3>\n<p>including the World Masters Athletics Championship in Porto Alegre, Brazil<\/p>\n<p>13 Oct &#8211; 27 Oct 13: <span style=\"margin-left: 35px;\">Porto Alegre &#8211; stayed at the Mecure Manhattan<\/span><br \/>\n28 Oct &#8211; 31 Oct 13: <span style=\"margin-left: 35px;\">Copacabana &#8211; stayed at the Windsor Plaza<\/span><br \/>\n1 Nov &#8211; 3 Nov 13: <span style=\"margin-left: 45px;\">Igua\u00e7u &#8211; stayed at the Viale Cataratas<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>XX World Masters Athletics Championships Stadia<\/h3>\n<p>Ralph competed in:<\/p>\n<p>5,000m Racewalk (track) &#8211; <span style=\"margin-left: 35px;\">1st M70-74<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 45px;\"><em>A comfortable win in warm conditions, but wary of additional entries for 10km and 20km<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n10km Racewalk (road) &#8211; <span style=\"margin-left: 49px;\">1st M70-74 plus 1st Team M65-69<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 45px;\"><em>Another comfortable win in hot conditions, but the 2km course is about 90m too long!! That&#8217;s an extra 450m on the 10km race<\/em>.<\/span><br \/>\n20km Racewalk (road) &#8211; <span style=\"margin-left: 49px;\">1st M70-74 plus 1st Team M65-69<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 45px;\"><em>A more trying win in hot and, near the end, wet conditions, but the 2km course is still about 90m too long!! Requests for a re-measure after the 10km were brushed aside. The silver medallist, Edmund Shillabeer (aka &#8216;Bob-a-Pint&#8217;), is a veterinarian from Bristol, and a delightful competitor [in the photo taken at the medals presentation]<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Brazil:<\/h3>\n<p>Population \u2013 200 million<\/p>\n<p>Language &#8211; Portuguese<\/p>\n<p>The land of coffee \u2013 no way \u2013 at least, not the way <i>we<\/i> like it.<\/p>\n<p>The land of futebol (soccer) \u2013 yes, yes, yes.<\/p>\n<p>Absolutely no semblance of racism in this enormous melting pot.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Porto Alegre:<\/h3>\n<p>Population \u2013 1.5 million<\/p>\n<p>Location \u2013 in the southern-most state, bordering Argentina to the west, Uruguay to the south. The city is located on a peninsula beside a delta\/enormous lake flowing from the junction of five rivers.<\/p>\n<p>Not tourist oriented. Difficult to find any \u2018souveniers\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Only one rainy day \u2013 had to be the 20km racewalk day, huh!<\/p>\n<h3>Porto Alegre moments:<\/h3>\n<p>Good vibes all round. Delighful, polite, helpful locals.<\/p>\n<p>Ovatine milk shakes at the main stadium [CETE] &#8211; delicious!!!<\/p>\n<p>Mecure Manhattan hotel breakfasts \u2013 excellent! . . . well, except when there were no \u2018breakfast tea\u2019 bags.<\/p>\n<p>Venhois food court \u2013 great value, and those Rafaello ice-creams!!!<\/p>\n<p>Ralph found a scout shop near the hotel \u2013 met a delightful, lively, rover scout, Carolina, and very helpful scout shop staff. Dawn bought a scout cap (and wore it everywhere) and some scout earrings.<\/p>\n<p>Once waited for a bus to return from the main stadium to the hotel, for four hours!<\/p>\n<p>Plenty of police \u2013 state, federal, military \u2013 practising for the World Cup (futebol), and the Olympics.
